50 Year Anniversary | John Glenn’s Orbit Around the Earth

Fifty years ago today John H. Glenn Jr, made his historic flight in the Friendship 7 space capsule, being the first American to orbit the Earth.  The flight only lasted 88.5 minutes, but he traveled 75,679 miles reaching a speed of 17,526 mph.  NASA is planning a commemorative medallion showing the key components of John Glenn’s legacy.

50th Anniversary of the First Manned Space Flight

On April 12, 1961, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin Alexeevich, became the first human to completely leave the Earth’s atmosphere.  The flight of Vostok 1 lasted just 108 minutes, and this cosmonaut marked a major milestone in human history.  This 10 Ruble coin was released by Russia on December 1, 2011.  Many thanks to Numismática Visual for the 411 on this cool coin.
