1950’s Remco Electric Science Kit

with 5 comments

I came across this neat high-tech toy from the 50’s in Dallas.  This Electric Science Kit was made by REMCO, a toy company started in the 40’s who made all sorts of cool toys that baby-boomers couldn’t live without.  Their name originated from the two words “remote control,” a thing that was science fiction to any layperson of that time.  Remco acquired several licenses for popular culture acts such as the Beatles, Monkees, Munsters, Lost in Space, Batman and Star Trek.  Whatever the reason, Remco filed bankruptcy in 1971, needless to say they didn’t have the marketing masters of today on their staff.  I’m sure this science kit was a must have for many future NASA engineers.

This is an ultimate gift for the person who has everything.  Here we have a 24 karat Gold and Diamond MacBook Pro from Computer Choppers.  Let’s be honest, who cares about hard drive size and processor speed at this point.  If your carrying this around, your making a pretty profound statement by itself.  This laptop might be a little flashy, but it sure looks cool.  Just throw down a cook $29K and your golden!  Check out other Coinologist All Things Gold archive posts here.

APPLE-1 — Personal Computer

Here is a great piece of personal computer history.  This APPLE-1 motherboard, cassette interface card, box, and original documents are going up for auction at Christie’s.  It was the first personal computer with a fully assembled motherboard, launching the home computer revolution.  It is expected to bring $160,600 – $240,900. What an incredible treasure someone had tucked away in a drawer.
