Designer:  Joel Iskowitz
Engraver:  Phebe Hemphill
Description:  The obverse depicts the portraits of Apollo 11 astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin E. “Buzz” Aldrin Jr. facing left, and Friendship 7 astronaut John Herschel Glenn Jr. facing right.  The design also features a partial view of the Earth from orbit, as well as a horizon line with an astronaut walking on the lunar surface facing the flag.  The names of all four astronauts – JOHN GLENN, NEIL ARMSTRONG, MICHAEL COLLINS and BUZZ ALDRIN – are inscribed along the outer rim.

Reverse

Engraver:  Don Everhart
Description:  The reverse features the Lunar Excursion Module orbiting the moon and the Friendship 7 mission capsule orbiting the Earth with the inscription WE CAME IN PEACE FOR ALL MANKIND.

Apollo 11 | The Eagle Has Landed

Forty years ago today President Kennedy’s “We choose to go to the Moon” speech became a reality.  Apollo 11 made up of two Americans that landed on the Moon on July, 10, 1969 at 4:17 pm EDT in the lunar module “Eagle”, with another American orbiting the Moon, awaiting their return to the “Colombia” command module, and hundreds of thousands of other Americans behind the scenes.  Having always been a fascinated with NASA and the American Space Program, these images always intrigue me and bring out the wonder of what the human race is capable of.
