Historic Denver Mint

with one comment

This Library of Congress photo was taken in 1906, the same year the Denver Mint started producing coins.   Through an Act of Congress the U.S. Treasury bought out Clark, Gruber & Company in 1863, and started a United States Assay Office in Denver, Colorado.  The current facility was built around 1904,  along with a delay in appropriations, their machinery made a stop at the Saint Louis Exposition of 1904 for display.  The Denver Mint produced its first coin on February 1, 1906.  This is the building where the 1916 D Mercury Dime and the 1911 D Indian Head Quarter Eagle were minted.  The Denver Mint is the single largest producer of coins in the world.  Check out other Coinologist archive photo posts here.
