1933 Double Eagle Auction

with one comment

Here is a must see video of the 1933 Double Eagle auction, which took place in 2002.  Most of us have heard of this coin auction, and it’s the coin of choice to display here on The|Coinologist home page,  but few or none of us have ever been witness to the event.  Well the time is now!  Please take sixteen minutes of your life and watch these two videos.  This was a pivotal moment in the coin business, and you will not be disappointed.  Please watch and read on!

Part 1/2:

Part 2/2:

What an amazing turn of events.  The bid of $6,600,000 plus a buyers fee of $990,000 equals the record-breaking sales price of $7,590,000.  A record in 2002 which still stands today.  The winning bidder had to pay an additional $20 to monetize the coin.  Like I said this was an amazing day for the numismatic world and I hope you spent the time to experience this moment.  It was an honor for me!

  1. Do we know who the person was that won? Is there any information on him? Or for all we know could it have been the government buying the coin back. Why would they NOT send someone to purchase the coin to get it back in their possession where they felt it belonged all along. What do you think?
