with one comment

The Act of March 3, 1853, authorized the establishment of a U.S. Assay Office in New York City “for the melting, refining, parting and assaying of gold and silver bullion and foreign coins, and for the casting the same into bars, ingots or disks, and provision for employment of the proper officers and assistants.”  This office commenced operations on October 10, 1854.  The nearly pure (999.8 fine) gold ingot show bears the incuse stamp of the Assay Office, and the date of manufacture showing 1933.  The New York Assay office was closed December 31, 1982.
